William Merritt Correllus, 84, of Oak Bluffs, and Little Egg Harbor, N.J., died on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 3:30 pm in Manahawkin, N.J. Bill was born at home at the State Forest in Edgartown on April 7, 1933. His father was the state forester for 50 years, and it bears his name, Manuel F. Correllus State Forest. His mother, Hilda Merritt Correllus, was a private-duty nurse and homemaker. William attended Edgartown School, and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

He married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Ann (Veira) Correllus, while he was home on leave at Christmas, on Dec. 29, 1951, in the winter church of Our Lady Star of the Sea. Together they raised a family of six, three sons and three daughters: William A. Correllus and wife Deborah of Merritt Island, Fla., deceased son Barry E. Correllus and wife Molly of Zanesville, Ohio, Patti Leighton and husband Raymond of Oak Bluffs, Robert M. Correllus and wife Lynne of North Attleboro, Barbara Leonard and husband Brett of Vineyard Haven, Brenda Goodwin and husband Aaron of Aurora, Mo. The couple also invited into the family a foreign exchange student from Brazil, Rodolfo “Rudy” Roehrig.

Bill received the Meritorious Service Medal as he distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Office of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe’s Representative to the Joint Coordination Center from Feb. 17, 1970, to April 1, 1972. This culminated a distinguished career in the service of his country. Bill and Gerri retired from the Air Force after 21 years of service, a tour to Thailand, and two tours abroad in England and Brussels.

Bill and Gerri worked side by side when they took over the family grocery business, Tony’s Market, in 1972, and turned the mom-and-pop store into a bustling business. They added beer and wine the following year, along with expanding to add the first lottery location on the Island. Bill enjoyed seeing his regular customers, and welcoming the summer crowds. Bill learned the game of darts while stationed in Burderop Park, Wiltshire, England, and started the first dart league on-Island at the Portuguese-American Club in 1976. In 1992 came a second retirement, when he and Gerri sold Tony’s to Dave and Ellen Richardson.

In retirement he enjoyed woodworking and making furniture for his family. He always had an “open door” policy at his house, hosting family, friends, and friends of friends on Winthrop Avenue, Oak Bluffs. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Geraldine of 57 years, his brother Richard Correllus, his sisters Jean A. Ward and Judith M. Strimel.

Services were held on June 27, at Our Lady Star of the Sea on Massasoit Avenue, Oak Bluffs. Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, with a reception at the Portuguese-American Club. Donations in Bill’s name may be made to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, Veterans Outreach Program.

Ronnee Lyle Schultz

Ronnee Lyle Schultz packed up his infectious smile, tall tales, years of service, devotion to his wife Heidi, and love of the outdoors to leave this worldly life, dying on June 9, 2017.

Ronnee was born on Oct. 20, 1933, to Alfred E. and Violet (Eckart) Schultz in Harvey, N.D. The family moved to Michigan, where Ronnee spent most of his childhood. He attended Bay City Handy High School. He was an Eagle Scout, later a Boy Scout troop leader, and was devoted to serving in the Scouts for many years. In 1953 he married Lucy Schulz, and they had three sons. He served in the Army for two years.

While in college he worked for Alaska Fish and Game and on a Great Lakes freighter, the J.F. Copmeyer. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in fisheries and wildlife in 1959, and went to work with Texas Fish and Game as a biologist in Corpus Christi. He and Lucy divorced, remarried, and divorced again, until they came to Falmouth, where Ronnee took a position with the Woods Hole office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He spent the rest of his professional life working there.

In 1971 he married Heidi Clarke Richards, and they established their lives together in West Tisbury. He joined the commuters who rode the ferry from Martha’s Vineyard to Woods Hole to work, and was known to play a mean game of cards during those trips across the sound. He served for a number of years as chairman of the West Tisbury planning board.

In 1972, he and Heidi purchased property on Mount Blue Stream in Maine, where he built a cabin that was a beloved retreat for the couple for several decades. He was an avid hunter and fisher, and often hosted his friends at the cabin to enjoy the outdoor life. While on the Vineyard, he played golf avidly, and he cheerfully took family members on hikes and beach walks. He shared his love of nature and the wonders of being in it with anyone who wanted to join him and learn. He and Heidi bought a catboat, Duckling, and sailed her in the sound for many years of marine joy. Ronnee was creative in making whimsical art pieces out of found objects. He made whirligigs as gifts to people he enjoyed. He offered himself as a handyman for a few years after he retired.

Ronnee was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Violet Schultz, and his son, Todd Schultz. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Heidi Schultz, his sons Randall Lee Schultz, and Jason Lyle Schultz, his brothers Jerrie Schultz and Charlie Schultz, his stepdaughters Sarah O. Richards and Ruth G. Richards, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and grand-nieces and -nephews.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. Meanwhile, the family likes to think he is now camping on a sandbank by the Saco River in Maine, where he had enjoyed many happy canoe trips with Heidi and other family members and friends.

Sidra Royal Bullard Dumont

By Karen J. Dumont

Sidra Royal Bullard Dumont died Saturday evening, June 24, 2017, at the age of 23, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital from complications of several autoimmune syndromes.

Sidra entered the world my daughter and left the world as my son — and I could not be more proud of his bravery, grace, humor, and tenacity handling such difficulties physically and mentally, and also being himself in a world with such strong social norms. He had a kind and tender heart and a keen wit.

He was a natural musician, and could play any instrument he picked up, from the flute, piano, drums, saxophone, viola, and guitar to the magnificent gift, the instrument of his operatic singing voice. He once told me he could “see” music in colors.

Sidra graduated from the West Tisbury School in 2007 and then from MVRHS in 2011. There he was a member of the Minnesingers, and toured Europe three times with them, and also with Sound of America. In drama he played Joanne in the production of “Rent,” and had good reviews after soloing at the evening of the arts. He was a perfectionist in all he endeavored.

After high school he attended two years at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va., to study voice and music. His other passion was horses; he was the proverbial barn rat, riding, training, and competing. He started riding at Crow Hollow and then at Red Pony, and evented with his best friend Smokey. He also spent many summers at Vershire Riding School in Vermont, and competed in USEA Area 1 events, and took first place for Beginner-Novice his first time out in Huntington, Vt.

Sidra was also a prolific writer, who could paint pictures with words — so much talent, so much love of life, friends, family, trans groups — they all meant so much as his world grew smaller. One could always see him wandering around the Island with his service dog, Sadie Mae.

Sidra is survived by his mother, Karen J. Dumont of West Tisbury; his father, Frazar J. Bullard of the Bahamas; his grandmother, Oslie Bullard, and many, many siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Hilma Dumont.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 9, from 1 pm to 3 pm in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs, with a prayer service officiated by the Rev. Cathlin Baker at 2:30 pm. According to Sidra’s wishes, cremation will follow. Visit ccgfuneralhome.com for online guestbook and information.

Andrea “Poppy” Quigley, poet, teacher, consultant, marketer, and longtime resident of Martha’s Vineyard, died on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, in Boston. She has joined the angels after losing her courageous battle to cancer.

Born in 1941 in New York City, Andrea was raised in Queens and received a B.A. in English from Queens College, an M.A. in liberal studies from SUNY, and an M.B.A. from Simmons College. Andrea studied writing at Skidmore Summer Institute, the Joiner Center at U. Mass, and Cape Cod Writers Institute. She was a much-loved teacher at John Glenn High School in Huntington, N.Y., where she was known as “Mrs. V,” before relocating to Boston to pursue a successful career in business, where she formed her own consulting company, ABQ Associates, specializing in corporate training.

Andrea returned to teaching later in life as a professor at Lesley University and Pine Manor College. After numerous visits to the magical Island, Andrea and her husband Ned moved to Martha’s Vineyard in the early 2000s, where she was an active member of the community, including a member of the Cleaveland House Poets, the Martha’s Vineyard Poets’ Collective, and the M.V. Poetry Society. Andrea served on the boards of Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Friends of Family Planning, and was affiliated with Women Empowered and Peace Quilts for Haiti.

Her voice in the arts, her poetic words, her passion for causes she believed in, and her endearing light will live on through the love she spread.

Andrea was predeceased by her brother Michael. She is survived by her husband, Ned Sternick; children Kimberly Biggs and Scott Vrusho (wife Kate); grandchildren Ashley, Dylan, and Anabelle (who knew her as Poppy), and brother Frank, along with many cousins here and in the Irish homeland.

A celebration of life will be held later in the summer on Martha’s Vineyard; all on- and off-Island folks will be welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name at the following charities: Stand Up to Cancer (standup2cancer.org), and Featherstone Center for the Arts (featherstoneart.org).

Richard D. Hathaway

Richard D. “Dick” Hathaway, 90, died on June 25, 2017, at his home in Edgartown. He was the husband of Janice (Holbrook) Hathaway.

Dick spent his childhood in Bangor, Maine; Cambridge; and of course in Edgartown. He entered World War II at the age of 15, and parachuted behind enemy lines in the Netherlands with the 101st Airborne Division. He went on to the Battle of the Bulge and other large and small battles.

He was saddened when he saw the condition of a liberated Nazi camp, where people had been starved, mistreated, and indeed murdered during the war. He spoke more about that than about his tough road to Germany. Later he signed up for more time in postwar Germany.

He went to work for Grant Brothers in Edgartown upon returning home, and enjoyed his interesting employers and the hard work they provided.

He loved fishing, and teaching young people to enjoy the sport and to have respect for the fish as well. I remember him saying (about bait), ‘Wouldn’t you like that if you were a fish?’ He won his seventh and final first place in the M.V. Bass and Bluefish Derby at the age of 70.

Over the years he was the proprietor of the Gremlin Frog, Hathaway’s Taxi (‘Get Away with Hathaway”) and Dick’s Deli in Edgartown. At one time he owned a fishing vessel, and was also clamming, quahogging, crabbing, conching, and oystering. He scalloped for many years, including the year he turned 89. He loved the ocean and all that it held.

His grandchildren and great-grandchildren had an awesome grandpa to love. At one point his grandson Brendan said he was going to skip college and go fishing with Grandpa Dick. The family all miss him.
He leaves behind his wife Janice; his nephews William Wannamaker, Hayden Wannamaker, and Kent Wannamaker; and his niece Martha Wannamaker. Willie lived with Uncle Dick and his first wife Jean Hathaway during his childhood. He is also survived by Janice’s children Gary, Mark (and wife Melinda), June, Matthew (and wife Jeanne), and by Matt’s children, Patrick, Brendan, Katie, Colin, and Megan DeFeo. Dick also had many faithful friends.

Dick’s remains will be interred at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn with his wife Janice’s family. “Gone Fishing” will be engraved on his stone.

Alfred H. Hopp, “Hoppy” of Hillside Village in Vineyard Haven, died on Friday morning, July 7, 2017, at Rhode Island Hospital at the age of 87.

Al was born in Boston on Sept. 20, 1929, the son of Alfred R. and Edith C. (Woodside) Hopp. His father was a German immigrant and his mother was born in Boston. He graduated from East Boston High School in 1947, and moved to Martha’s Vineyard in July 1956. Al worked at the Mansion House for 17 years doing maintenance, and serving as a cook and assistant manager. He followed that by doing construction work for Manuel Sylvia. Hoppy retired as a chef from the Black Dog after working there for 11 years, 3 months, and 11 days (as he retold the story). Alfred was a Tisbury volunteer firefighter for 34 years.

He was a Master Mason for 32 years, and a lifetime member of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and Oriental-Martha’s Vineyard Lodge in Oak Bluffs. He served as Worshipful Master of the Martha’s Vineyard Masonic Lodge located in Vineyard Haven in 1991, and as secretary from 1985 until 1994. Al was presented the Meritorious Service Award in 1996, and on Oct. 24, 2016, the Masonic dining hall was named after W. Alfred H. Hopp for his dedication to the craft and sacrifices in the kitchen. For the coup de grace, Brother Hopp received the distinguished Joseph Warren Medal on May 22, 2017, presented by RW James Tappan Morse.

Alfred was also a member of the Masonic brotherhood of the Aleppo Temple Shriners, the Scottish High Rite-Boston Chapter, the Royal Arch Cape Cod Council and Chapter Council. He was a member of the Improved Order of the Redmen, and past president of the Hillside Village Tenant Association. He volunteered for the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging for many years.

Hoppy loved the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics — really a diehard New England sports fan. GO SOX! He enjoyed woodworking and carving. He loved to fish, tell stories, and laugh. Recently he enjoyed spending time with his 3 youngest grandsons; they were the true light of his world. Al was an incredible cook; if you were lucky he might have shared a recipe or two with you. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute, especially time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Corinne Medeiros of Hyannis, Karen Lobdell and husband Kenneth of West Tisbury, Stephen Hopp and wife Irene of Florida, Kristine Hopp of Holyoke, and Sarah Marcotte and husband Brett of Seekonk. Boyd Hand Cowper

Boyd Hand Cowper, 89, of East Chop, was a force to be reckoned with. He died on March 24, 2017, after a short illness. Boyd and his wife Jocelyn, married for 64 years, have spent summers in East Chop since they first came here from Montreal, Quebec, in the early 1960s.

His family remembers Boyd as someone who was restless. Until his last days, Boyd kept busy — with his real estate ventures, going to the beach, swimming, sailing, kayaking, and clamming. No matter how old, Boyd couldn’t miss out on the fun.

We also remember him for his stories. He loved to talk — if you knew him, you know this is true. He made you wish you were alive during the good old days, and if you were, you wished you had lived them out like he did.

In his youth in Canada, he played water polo and was a top downhill ski racer. Throughout his life, he was a great swimmer, and loved to sail. Four years ago, he lost a kayak race in Sengekontacket, but won a prize for being the oldest contestant.

Boyd was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, as they are of him. He is survived by his wife Jocelyn, his children Bruce (wife Josette Biagini) of Montreal, Quebec, Rusty of Fredericksburg, Va., and Corey of Sarasota, Fla., and his six grandchildren, Alexandre, Ariane, Fay, Peter, Lily, and Nevin.

East Chop will remember Boyd’s vibrant presence, his entrepreneurial spirit, his great conversation, and his love of the ocean, and he will be missed dearly.
