Robert E. Stafursky

Robert E. Stafursky (“Rob”), 35, passed away unexpectedly at home in Lowell on Feb. 4, 2020.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1984, to Margaret (Staples) and Bill Stafursky of Oak Bluffs. Rob’s childhood was filled with Island activities — schools, camps, teams, swimming, sailing, Catholic church, etc. He participated in the MVRHS golf and track and field teams, and the Close-Up program. He attended Curry College in Milton before returning to the Vineyard to start his career.

Rob was known for his caring and loyal friendships, which were ever-present, as was his fine sense of humor. He enjoyed just being with a friend — especially playing video games, watching shows, and riding around while listening to rap. Rob loved animals, and often took care of friends’ pets as well as his own cats. Washington, D.C., London, New England, and Canada were trips that are fondly remembered. The Island was ingrained in Rob, and he always wanted to be at a beach or surrounded by nature.

Rob’s move to Lowell brought new friendships, and that is where his friend introduced him to his fiancée, Sheila. He and she became inseparable. Sheila introduced him to her friends and the city of Lowell for the past three years. They enjoyed walking through the city, feeding the ducks, or walking along the rivers, and of course, going for rides. Both went to work for Uber Eats.

Rob was predeceased by his father, Bill, and is survived by his mother, Margaret, his sister, Monica, and husband Rob Crozier, and his brother, Joshua Stafursky. He is survived by his nieces, Amelia and Nora Crozier, and Olivia Stafursky, and by his nephew, Noah Stafursky. He is survived by his fiancée, Sheila McDonald.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 in St. Augustine’s Church, Franklin Street in Vineyard Haven, followed by burial services at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oak Bluffs. All are welcome to join family and friends at the Ocean View Restaurant in Oak Bluffs.

Donations can be given to Veteran Services, M.V. Community Services, 111 Edgartown Road, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs. Visit ccgfuneralhome.com for online guestbook and information.

Ann Mathewson Howes, 82, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2019, at her home in West Tisbury.

Ann was a well-known watercolorist on the Vineyard for her scenes of the Island. She showed her awardwinning paintings at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown, the All-Island Art Show in Oak Bluffs, and the Night Heron Art Gallery in Vineyard Haven. She was a regular art exhibitor at the Vineyard Artisans Festivals in West Tisbury, and was on the board of directors of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association. Ann loved teaching inspiring workshops all over the Island.

While living in King of Prussia, Pa., she was a member of the Upper Merion Cultural Center near her home, and was on the faculty at the Greater Norristown Art League, as well as the Wayne Art Center, where she led numerous watercolor workshops. She exhibited in art shows throughout the area, and participated in the annual Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show that showcased artists throughout the region. She twice designed Christmas cards for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Cancer Society, helping the society earn more than $300,000 for cancer research. She achieved signature memberships in many prestigious watercolor associations, including the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (PWS), Philadelphia Water Color Society (PWCS), the American Watercolor Society (AWS), and the National Watercolor Society (NWS).

Ann’s paintings are displayed in homes all over the Vineyard and across the country, and she had many repeat customers who returned to purchase her paintings year after year. She also illustrated a book by Elaine Pace titled, “Island: A Memoir.” She traveled to Italy, England, and Bermuda, taking workshops with fellow artists. Above all, her lovely personality and smile will always be remembered.

She married Theodore C. Howes in 1958 in the West Tisbury Congregational Church. She volunteered at the M.V. Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby and the West Tisbury Agricultural Society Fair, always involved, as her late husband was an avid fisherman, and her late mother, Alice Mathewson, formerly ran the Agricultural Fair. When Ted and Ann retired and moved permanently to the Vineyard, they settled at Kingdom, the property Ann’s parents had bought from the Kings in the 1930s.

She is survived by her son, Theodore C. Howes, and his wife Sarah Shafer Howes; her daughter, Suzanne Howes; her granddaughter, Leah H. Pachico; and her cousins, the Glimmerglass girls: Nancy Cabot, Judy Bryant, and Susie Boass, along with their extended families.

Family and friends are invited to join a celebration of Ann’s life at the Howes House in West Tisbury on Feb. 29 at 2 pm, with refreshments to follow.

Hannah Lacob Malkin, 99, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2020, at her home for the past nine years in Lantana, Fla. She was born on Nov. 17, 1920, in Fayetteville, N.C., to Myer and Sarah Lacob.

Hannah graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a B.S. in sociology in 1941, and it was here that she met Moses Montefiore Malkin, whom she would marry and celebrate 66 happy years together. Hannah later earned an M.S.W. from Columbia University in 1948.

She worked passionately for many years in various organizations assisting minorities and refugees from war-torn Europe, including the YMCA, National Refugee Service, Jewish Community Service of Queens-Nassau, and the Federation for Jewish Philanthropies of N.Y.C. Upon moving to Milford, Conn., and later Woodbridge, she worked tirelessly for Jewish Family Services of New Haven. Here, Hannah was very active, and held the position of president of the Gay Head Taxpayers’ Association in the 1970s and 1980s. She was instrumental in negotiating a settlement of the Indian land claim suit against the town of Gay Head by the Wampanoag Tribal Council through a long, 13-year ordeal which included appearing before congressional committees in Washington, D.C., on many occasions. In 2018, Hannah donated a parcel of land on Lighthouse Road to the town of Aquinnah to be enjoyed by all, as a respite and overlook for the expansive views of Menemsha Sound.

Edward F. Jordan

Edward F. Jordan of Dover and Edgartown died peacefully on May 6, 2020, in Natick, at the age of 92, after a heroic battle with declining health.

Ed was born on Dec. 6, 1927, in Boston. He attended high school in Portland, Maine, served in WWII where he was injured in the line of duty, graduated from Gorham State Teachers College (University of Maine), and then joined New York Life Insurance Co., where he had a distinguished 33-year career. Ultimately he became the manager partner of the Boston (Bay Colony) office, and developed that into the No. 1 New York Life office in the country. During his career, he developed many lifelong friendships and helped numerous individuals share success within the insurance industry, while providing financial protection to countless families. In 1967, after many company transfers, he settled in Dover, calling it home, and made many additional friends. At the time of his passing, he was the oldest active member of the Dover American Legion, and scheduled to be Dover’s 2020 Grand Marshal in the Memorial Day celebration.

Despite his professional success and accomplishments, Ed was — above all — a man who loved and cherished his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was a thoughtful friend, dedicated brother, and tough but super-caring human and father. He loved nothing more than cooking holiday meals, hosting events, hunting in Maine, gardening, fishing, clamming, reading, telling jokes, dining out with friends, Westerns, Caribbean travel, and caring for his beloved homes and Dobermans, most of which, for simplicity, he named Toby.

Ed is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: son Steven (Katie) of Edgartown, and their children Collette, Philip, Jennifer, and Steven Jr.; daughter Joleen (Will) of Franklin, and their children Bill, Taylor, Matt, and Jody; daughter Kimberly (Ken) of Naples, Fla., and their children Jim and Amy; son Edward P. (Missy) of Dover, and their children Brian and Brooks. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy (Bob) Huff of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and longtime companion Marleen Green of Brookline. He was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Nelly, oldest son Philip, son-in-law James Urquhart, and his loving wife of 37 years, Collette.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the healthcare team at Mary-Ann Morse. In addition, they would like to thank Leonard Morse Hospital and Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for their outstanding care over the past 52 years, as well as the Dover community, including but not limited to Dover Police, Fire, Highway, and Council on Aging, all of whom helped Ed on multiple occasions.

A family, Catholic graveside service will be held on May 9 at Highland Cemetery in Dover, at noon. Due to the coronavirus, a celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dover American Legion (Edward F. Jordan donation), 32 Dedham St., Dover, MA 02030, or at doverlegion.org. Funds will support veterans and the community. For online guestbook, go to gfdoherty.com. Funeral arrangements are in the care of George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, Needham.

Paul Allen Medeiros

Paul Allen Medeiros, 65, of Lempster, N.H., died on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a long and difficult illness. Paul was married to Laurie Anne (Barry) Medeiros.

Paul was born in Oak Bluffs on April 26, 1955, son of Raul B. Medeiros Jr. and Cora (Simpkin) Medeiros. Paul was raised in Vineyard Haven, and spent most of his life, alongside his wife, children, and beloved pets, residing in the masterpiece of a home that he built with his father. Paul graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, and went on to trade school, specializing in the electrical trade in the construction industry. His efforts resulted in his becoming a top-notch electrician who was dedicated to quality work, and determined to “put a spark in your life.”

Aside from his work, Paul’s favorite things were all centered around the love of his family, and getting out into the natural world. He loved camping, and causing trouble just enough to bring a nervous, but anticipatory smile to all those who dared to watch. A bit of a pyro, his campfires had to be massive, both for warmth as well as spectacle. It would be a guarantee that one of those spectators would be a beloved pet, as Paul had a strong connection with all his pets, and found great joy in spending time with them.

Paul was known by many nicknames, and wore many hats. One of his greatest family legacies is his contribution to the cleanup of family dinners at Gram and Pa’s. Equipped with a fork and dinner roll, he’d circle the kitchen like a shark, and ask, “You gonna eat that?” Without waiting for a response, he would scoop up the food on the plate and be on to the next slow-moving family member to see if they needed any assistance in the cleanup of their “leftovers.” If you were to go looking for him after that, you’d be directed to the couch, where he would be resting from all of the festivities (a.k.a., food coma) in pure bliss.

Paul was also a talented mechanic and builder. His skills were learned from his father, and motivated by the love of the process, and a determination to fix what had been broken. Whether building a homemade tractor, creating a birdhouse, or adding another outlet so there was always easy access, Paul was a craftsman. Oh, and if you needed something done immediately, all you had to do was call Paul, and he’d be there. We have lost a light in our lives, and our family, but these wonderful memories of his accomplishments, love, and mischievous play will always be with us, and surely, not forgotten.

Paul was predeceased by both of his parents, as well as his brother, Steven R. Medeiros, of Kennesaw, Ga. Surviving Paul are his wife, Laurie; his son, Matthew Raul Medeiros, and daughter, Katelin Belle Medeiros; his brother, David J. Medeiros of Edgartown; and his sisters, Joan E. Medeiros of Warner, N.H., and Kathy J. Rogers of Vineyard Haven; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service was held on May 11, where Paul’s niece Joanne Ritter presided, and eulogized him as he was laid to rest in his family’s plot. Due to COVID-19, a public celebration of his life is to be held on the Island at a later date.

Condolence cards and any memories of Paul to share may be mailed to the Medeiros family at 114 Breezy Hill Road, Bradford, NH 03221, and donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Vineyard House via online form or mail to Vineyard House Inc., P.O. Box 4599, 56 Short Hill Road, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Walter J. Wright, known to his family and friends as Bud, passed away at his home in Tequesta, Fla., on May 4, 2020, with his loving wife Joyce by his side. He was 89 years old.

Formerly of West Tisbury, Darien and New Canaan, Conn., and Port Washington, N.Y., Bud grew up in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx, which gave him a lifelong love of being on the water. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science.

His various careers included theatrical lighting on “Your Show of Shows,” real estate, restaurateur, commodities broker, and franchise creator. He instilled his entrepreneurial spirit in all of his children. He produced four boys with his former wife, Doris, in Port Washington, Long Island. He met Joyce, and they married in 1972, and moved to New Canaan, where they brought together two sets of kids.

As a gardener, woodworker, boatbuilder, lover of all animals — especially dogs — seaman, and traveler, Bud’s huge enthusiasm and pursuit of all interests kept him active his whole life. He involved his children in all his many activities, which made for fun and adventurous childhoods that they carry with them to this day.
As an avid sailor, he was a member of the New York Yacht Club, Noroton Yacht Club, and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. His love of the water brought him to the Five Mile River in Darien, where he could go out on his beloved boat Rejoice on a daily basis. In retirement, he and Joyce settled on Martha’s Vineyard, which put them in the perfect place to enjoy their love of the water and agriculture, and make wonderful memories for their kids and grandchildren for 25 years.

Bud is survived by his wife Joyce (Burroughs) of 47 years; his sons David Wright (Kathe Fain) of Fort Bragg, Calif., Tom Wright of Monson, Doug Wright (Donna Noethig) of Jupiter, Fla., John Wright (Kristann Townsend) of Ridgefield, Conn., and stepson Chris Morrow of Carbondale, Colo., and stepdaughter Liz Morrow Reid (Larry) of Wilton, Conn.; 16 grand and step-grandchildren: Dylan, Joey, Stephen, Danny, Kyle, Kathryn, Jessica (Wurster), Michael, Kristine, Jack, Nick Wright, Max and Meaghan Morrow, Michael, Christopher and Katie Reid; and four great-grand and step-great grandchildren.

A memorial will occur at a future date.

Harold Hayden Sears

Harold Hayden Sears, 84, of Falmouth, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully on April 28, 2020.

While summering in Falmouth, he met his future bride, who was also a summer resident. It was like a story of country boy meets city girl, and the rest was history. He will be joining his loving wife of 59 years Kristen Coakley Sears, who preceded him in death.

Born in Boston on July 8, 1935, Harold, or Kim, as many friends knew him, was the son of Harold Bright Sears and Olga Osterhout Sears. He spent his early years in Weston, and summers in Falmouth, where as a child he quickly fell in love with the Cape and Islands, the ocean, and particularly boats.

He found that school was not his interest, and at a young age left to go to work; shortly after, he started his own construction business. While establishing his business, raising a family, and summer camping and cruising on the boat in Falmouth in the 1960s, he found the growth of the Boston suburbs was bringing him closer to the ocean, where he felt most at home, and in 1968 moved to Falmouth permanently, where he could be down at the harbor working, playing, sleeping, or talking about boats.

Since he was never known to sit still, in 1970 his love for the Vineyard and friends brought him into new businesses on the Vineyard, which he maintained up to the day of his passing.

Kim’s love of the Cape and Islands, the ocean, boats, cruising from Northern Maine to the Gulf Coast of Florida, friends and family parties and reunions in Falmouth, and the Adirondacks were some of his greatest passions. His love of life, his entrepreneurial spirit, and the love of family, friends, and the people he worked with will always be remembered.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Wendy Ann Child. Kim is survived by his sisters, Anne (“Nancy”) Robbins and Olga (“Sandy”) Karplus; his son Clayton Sears; his grandchildren, Benjamin Sears, Taylor Devine, Lindsay Child, Jack Child, and Sam Child. He was a proud great-grandfather to Niamh and Ronan Devine. He is also survived by his best friend, Fred Testa, and longtime friend Barbara Fletcher.

A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date.
