Myrtle Case

Myrtle Case died quietly in her new home in Vermont, with her husband and daughter at her side.

Born and raised in Scotland, Myrtle loved being outdoors, and spent many happy times with her family enjoying the beaches and hills, forests and lochs of the western islands and Highlands. After raising her two daughters, and seeing them marry and move to other countries, Myrtle dispersed her possessions, condensing her life into two large cases, and flew to America to begin a new chapter. She eventually settled on Martha’s Vineyard, where she lived for nearly 25 years. Here she became widely recognized around Vineyard Haven’s downtown shops and waterfront, touching many people’s lives.

Myrtle always kept busy, and was always willing to try something new. She had a variety of jobs throughout her life, but around 1995, she set herself up as a seamstress in a tiny studio at Five Corners, and ran her little business there for the next 20 years. She always said she never could have dreamed of being a seamstress, but she loved the work, and she loved the dozens upon dozens of people she met. For her, the work was less about running a business, and more about helping people with whatever skills she could offer. Where many businesses might charge extra for quick turnarounds, Myrtle often offered to do a quick repair job or alteration for free, if only the client would wait a few minutes while she did the work!

Myrtle loved trees. She reveled in their beauty and variety, and felt a close bond. She developed her own style of sculpture, imitating the bonsai trees she loved to grow by winding thin copper wire strands into little “wire trees” that mimicked full-size living specimens. Over the years she produced untold numbers of these trees, modeled after many different tree varieties. Some were sold in art galleries and craft markets; but many were simply given away. She always had a number on display, and to admire them would inevitably lead to an offer to “take one home”; many people did. For her, it was always the planning and doing that was important. Whatever financial gain might come was only a secondary consideration. She was full of ideas, and there was hardly a problem for which she was at a loss to come up with some suggestion.

In 2002 she and her husband launched the boat that they had built together. For the next dozen years, the Emma Morgan was a fixture of the Vineyard Haven waterfront, and a center of Myrtle’s life. She was frequently recognized rowing her dog and cat from boat to shore and back again. Some boaters will remember the notes of her button accordion as she enjoyed summer evenings in the cockpit, playing through some of the hundred or so tunes that she had learned.

She enjoyed having her grandchildren come to visit, and this became a regular and frequent occurrence that lasted all the time she lived here. Those kids hold their visits to the Island as highlights in their own lives. Myrtle was dedicated to her church, and held just about every position available in the governance and operation of the church. She always had a exuberant and happy greeting for any one she met, however slightly she knew them.

There will be no services or memorials for Myrtle Case, who was convinced that life does not end; that what seems to be a death is really but a transition to a new consciousness and experience. Always ready for a new adventure, she was certain that her zest for life, as it has been, would continue in new ways that we, as yet, cannot see. Her family asks that those who wish to remember her do so in their hearts, and by gathering in twos, threes, and fours to honor this remarkable woman.

James S. (“Jimmy”) Combs Jr. of Edgartown died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Dec. 14, 2017. Visiting with friends and family in Ohio, he was killed in an automobile accident as the passenger of a drunk driver, a tragic and cautionary tale, leaving his family and friends shocked, their lives shattered.

Jimmy moved from his hometown in Ohio to Edgartown in February 2011, falling in love with the island. He lived with his mom, Karen Newhart, and worked in several locations in Edgartown, including Donaroma’s, Dairy Queen and the Mailroom, meeting many of his closest friends on the Vineyard.

Jimmy was happiest surrounded by friends and family. He was a loving and caring brother, a favorite cousin, a cool nephew, a fun and loyal friend and co-worker. Most of all, he was a cherished and beloved son and grandson who placed his parents and grandparents above all others.

You knew with Jimmy “what you saw was what you got!” He loved you for who you were, without judgment. He was easygoing, fun-loving, the life of the party. He was ridiculously funny, and had an energy and smile that could capture you before he said, “Hi, I’m Jimmy.” His affable nature and beautiful soul are ours to remember with an immeasurable sadness and acute fondness.

Jimmy was a beacon whose light was tragically dimmed. His death could have been prevented. The drunk driver, who survived the accident, was one of Jimmy’s best friends. Please, if you’re reading this, remind your friends and family, and yourself, to think before you get in the car with an impaired driver.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 24, at the P.A. Club, from 1 to 4 pm. If you loved Jimmy, miss Jimmy, were fortunate enough to revel in the sheer pleasure of his company; if you laughed at his silliness when you weren’t in the mood, sang along to the radio with him, watched LeBron dunks with him; if you worked with him or he worked for you; if you were on the receiving end of Jimmy’s excellent customer service and smile, please, come and share your stories with us on Sunday. Whether you knew him well, hardly knew him, or only knew of him, come celebrate his life, his love, his laughter on the day before what would be have been his 28th birthday. It’s gonna be a lovefest, folks!

Memorial Friday for Dr. Gail Eliot

Angela Katherine Waldron

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Angela K. Waldron, 72, of Aquinnah, on April 13, 2019. At the time of her death she was comforted by her loving daughter, Wenonah (“Nonie,”) and longtime friend Rosie Roberts. Nonie and Rosie kept a constant vigil at Angie’s bedside at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital during the last week of her life.

Angie was the youngest of three children, born on Feb. 1, 1947, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to Thomas B. Waldron and Eleanor (Schultz) Waldron. She grew up in West Tisbury across from Alley’s General Store. Angie attended the West Tisbury Elementary School, the Tisbury School, and graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 1964. She then went on to Franklin Pierce College. She was happy to stay in touch with her college friends over all these years.

Angie, like her mother, was an avid reader. Her readings gave her a worldly vision, but she was a West Tisbury girl through and through. Her soul never strayed far from the town she loved. Angie loved the Agricultural Fair. She spent each day of every year at the fair. She loved to enter one of her many animals and flowers in hopes of winning a blue ribbon. She shared that love with her grandchildren, and urged them to enter their art, flowers, and pets. Her early years were spent working the family farm with her siblings, swinging from the rafters at Whiting’s barn with her friends, and riding horses. Throughout her life she enjoyed visiting her ancestral family lands at Deep Bottom Cove on Tisbury Great Pond. Angie, along with her parents and siblings, Joan and Dickie, spent many happy summers in their small family camp during her youth.

Angie had a deep love for animals. For many years she rode horses at Pond View Farm, under the watchful eye of Marjorie Manter. Marjorie treated the girls like family, and often had them over for Sunday dinner with her parents, Dan’l and Lillian. As soon as Nonie was old enough to ride, she put her on a horse and took great pride in passing along her passion. Angie rode into her wedding to Jeffrey Madison on horseback in 1973.

Angie lived a life of community service. After many years waitressing, she began work at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services under the guidance of the late Dr. Milton Mazer. She also served the town of Aquinnah for many years as the town treasurer, and enjoyed the casual camaraderie with taxpayers from that community during her tenure. She later worked for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) as the community outreach coordinator for 25 years. During that time she coordinated services to many tribal families. She was also a certified substance abuse counselor. In her retirement, Angie became the animal control officer for the town of Aquinnah, and worked at the Aquinnah Public Library.

Angela Waldron is survived by her only child, Wenonah Madison-Sauer; her son-in-law, Daniel Sauer; four grandchildren, Waylon, Amos, Jaleah, and Luz; her sister, Joan Jenkinson and her husband, Walter (“Pat”); her niece, Holly Bario and her children; her nephew, Patrick Jenkinson and his son; and former husband Jeffrey Madison. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas B. Waldron, her mother, Eleanor (Shultz) Waldron, and a brother, Richard.

A graveside service will be held in West Tisbury Cemetery, State Road, West Tisbury, on Friday, April 26, at 1:30 pm, followed by a reception at the M.V. Agricultural Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1748, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs. Visit ccgfuneralhome.com for online guestbook and information.

Lucy Louise Costa (Roy), 79, died Sunday, April 7, 2019, at Windermere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Unit 3.

Lucy was born on March 12, 1940, to John Costa and Mary Rezendes, and grew up in Edgartown. She graduated from Edgartown High School in 1958. She married Joseph Roy in 1964, and shared 32 years of marriage.

Growing up, Lucy was a very good athlete, and played softball, basketball, and dodgeball. According to her classmates, she could hit the ball out of the park, and you didn’t want to be on the other end of her throws playing dodgeball. We were also told that she was a fantastic cheerleader, and was very artistic. She loved to draw and color pictures.

Lucy was a loving and devoted mother who was a very hard worker; she received her babysitting certificate in high school. She worked for years at the Harborside Inn as a chambermaid, and later at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a housekeeper for many more years, until she became a homemaker for her children.

Lucy loved to socialize, listen to live bands, and dance in her younger years. A favorite activity of Lucy’s was playing cards, especially rummy with her friends and family. She also enjoyed building stackable objects with a deck of cards.

Lucy was an avid darts player at the P.A. Club, and won many trophies for her league play over the years. She was an auxiliary member of the V.F.W. Post No. 9261. She also enjoyed bowling in a league at the old bowling hall, and enjoyed playing Wii Bowling at Woodside. Later at Windemere, she advocated for a Nintendo Wii to continue to bowl.

Lucy also loved bingo, and had her own bingo machine, which she would play weekly with her sister Bobbie and friends at Woodside. While at Windemere, she always looked forward to the bingo games, and won several Beanie Babies and other stuffed animals.

Holidays and birthdays were special times for her. She would start shopping for Christmas in July, as she had so many people she wanted to give to. She was always so generous and thoughtful, and never left anyone out. She always wanted to see pictures of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, whom she took such great pride in.

She decorated for every holiday, and loved dressing up for Halloween. She especially liked Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and the Cardinals, as she was known to love the color red. Lucy was so happy when she finally got her red car. Lucy also enjoyed watching “I Love Lucy,” Western movies, Hallmark Channel, “The Waltons,” collecting Beanie Babies and knickknacks, and listening to Elvis Presley. She was a woman with a few nicknames, such as “Lucy Goosey” and “Aunt Tootsie,” and usually said “Toot-a-loo” instead of goodbye. Lucy will be sorely missed for her smile, great sense of humor, and her joking around.

Lucy is survived by her children, Crystal Roy (Mike Delis), Brenda Viera (Michael Cassiani), Sharon Fisher, Richard Roy (Eliana Maria de Jesus), Marie Elena Hussey (Ron Hussey); her stepchildren, Beverly Barske, Rhonda Smith, Robert Roy, Joseph Roy Jr., Steven Roy, and their families; and her brother Arthur Costa (Joyce Costa). She also leaves her grandchildren, Leanne Cash, Andrew Jackson, Nicholas and Travis Viera; Eric, Matthew, Ryan, and Curtis Fisher; Dylan Thornton, Alex Donald, Ryan and Brendan Hussey; and her great-grandchildren, Tyson and Cameron Cash, Regan Fisher, and Ellanova Donald. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Lucy was predeceased by her parents, John Costa and Mary Rezendes Baptiste, her stepfather Robert Baptiste, her former husband Joseph Roy, her son David A. Roy, and her siblings Helen Rogers, Gloria Jeffers, Benny Baptiste, Barbara Perry, John Costa, and Bobbie Donovan.

A special thanks to the Vineyard cCommunity, Woodside Village, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, and Windemere Nursing & Rehab staffs for all their support, caring, and compassion throughout the years.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 4, in the Old Westside Cemetery, corner of Cooke Street and Pease Point Way South, Edgartown, at 10 am, officiated by the Rev. Michael Nagle. Please wear something red; it was Lucy’s favorite color.

A celebration of life will follow at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs at 11 am; please bring a dish to share.

Donations in Lucy’s memory may be made to the Holy Ghost Society, P.O. Box 2203, or to Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, P.O. Box 1747, both in Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.
