Steven C. Gramkowski died on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, in Cape Coral, Fla. He was 69.

Steve, as he liked to be called, was born on July 18, 1948, in Pittsfield to Anne G. Gramkowski and Frank J. Gramkowski.

Steve was an expert carpenter, and attended vocational school, where he met his wife of 49 years, Sandra. Together they ran their construction business, Gramco. He was always willing to lend a hand to his family and friends. He loved to fish in the annual Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby with Sandy and his family. One year he caught a 54-pound bass. He enjoyed traveling with Sandra, and trips to Disneyland with the grandchildren. On one of Steve and Sandra’s trips to Mexico, they caught 101- and 104-pound sailfish that were mounted, and for many years graced their wall.

Dad liked to teach his grandson Brendan how to fix cars, and he had hoped to restore and sell old cars in his retirement. When he saw his granddaughters, he liked to show them how things worked. When his granddaughter Gabi thought of going into building trades, he was really happy.

The family say, We love you and we miss you always.

Steve was the loving husband of Sandra L. Gramkowski, who predeceased him on Nov. 15, 2017. His sister Kathryn, Ksy for short, predeceased him.

Steve is survived by daughters Kimberly C. Carlos of Edgartown, and Theresia L. Gramkowski of Cape Coral, Fla. He was the grandfather of four, Brendan M. Gramkowski of Cape Coral, and Sabrina E. Carlos, Gabriella C. Carlos, and Franchesca R. Carlos, all of Edgartown. Steve’s brothers and sisters are Francis (Mary) and Tony (Terry) Gramkowski, John (Donna) Gramkowski, Marybeth (Bob) Creamer, Bob (Vicki) Gramkowski, Barbara (Mike) Aron, and David (Colleen) Gramkowski.

Warren Terrell (Terry) Upson died on Dec. 16, 2017.

Born in New Haven, Conn., to J. Warren and Grace (Fisher) Upson, he grew up in Waterbury, Conn., where he attended local schools. He graduated from Mount Hermon School and Yale University (1960). He received an M.B.A. from New York University and a P.M.D. from the Harvard Business School. Upon graduation from Yale, he spent three years in the U.S. Navy, and was discharged as a lieutenant in 1963.

A longtime summer resident of Chilmark, Terry and his family of two generations built homes on Abel’s Hill. For years, you could always find Terry sailing a Sunfish on the pond, lunching with his family on the beach, or leading escapades to Squibnocket. Terry had a gift for clambakes, celebrations, and adventure. He was always ready with a song of good cheer to keep the spirits high.

He spent 25 years with Chemical Bank (now JPMorgan Chase), the last 10 of which he was the founding CEO and president of Chemical Bank of Canada (now JPMorgan Canada).

While in Toronto, Terry developed numerous close friendships, and enjoyed sailing on Lake Ontario and skiing at Whistler. He was also involved in a number of community activities. He was director of Junior Achievement of Metropolitan Toronto, the Yale Club of Toronto, the Canadian Bankers Association, and the Canadian Opera Company. He was chairman of the corporate sponsorship committee of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and a member of the Toronto Board of Trade.

After a short stint as a divisional executive for Bank of Boston, Terry relocated to Naples, Fla., where he was senior vice president and part of the management team who returned BancFlorida to profitability, and resulted in its sale to Wachovia Corp. He then became founding president of Citizens Community Bank, Marco Island, Fla., which later became part of Fifth Third Bank.

Over the years he was involved in many community activities. In Naples, he was president of the Yale Club and treasurer of the Pelican Bay Property Owners. He was also a former member of the Economic Development Council of Collier County, the Robert Morris Associates of Collier County, the Marco Island and Naples Rotary Clubs, and the Marco Island Water Advisory Committee.

Terry is survived by his loving wife Marian (Harvey) Upson; a son, Daniel Warren Upson, and two daughters, Mary Upson Cunningham and Martha Upson Barlow; as well as by four grandchildren, Taylor Upson, Madison Upson, Claire Cunningham, and Matthew Cunningham.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held in Naples, Fla., in the coming weeks.

Alden Besse

Alden Besse, 93, of Vineyard Haven, died on Dec. 13, 2017, at Long Hill of Edgartown.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 28 at Grace Episcopal Church, Vineyard Haven.

Alden Besse was born on July 11, 1924, in Syracuse, N.Y., to Arthur Besse Sr. and Eleanor Pass Besse. At the age of 2, he contracted polio, and though it affected his left arm, the disease did not dim his vigor. The “Besse boys,” Alden and his older brothers, Arthur Lyman and Richard Waterman, were avid sailing competitors on Martha’s Vineyard, where they summered as children.

Alden spent his formative years at Forman School and Brooks School before attending and graduating from Harvard with a B.A. degree in 1948. He felt called to the ministry, and received his master of divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1951. After his ordination to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, Alden continued his life of service in Annapolis, Md., as curate at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. He first served as rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Altoona, Pa., starting in 1957, the same year he married his beloved wife, Barbara Ham of Arlington, Va.

In 1963, Alden, his wife, and their two children moved to serve as rector of St. Michael’s and All Angels Church in Rumford, R.I., where their third child was born. Whether it was his time spent in the city of Annapolis, the railroad town of Altoona, or the turbulent times of the 1960s, Alden incorporated peace, justice, and reconciliation in all his outreach.

Alden’s final position as rector was at Trinity Episcopal Church in Whitinsville, from 1980 to 1989.

Alden and Barbara retired to their beloved Martha’s Vineyard in 1990, but Alden’s feet barely touched the ground before he became involved with many aspects of Vineyard life. He started the annual CROP Walk to raise funds for Church World Service, worked tirelessly with the Vineyard Peace Council, was chaplain at Windemere, led the Clergy Association, and was pastoral assistant at Grace Episcopal Church, often helping at the altar and assisting or performing weddings and funerals for those who had known him for many years. Many Vineyarders felt his presence, as he called often on people in their homes, in the hospital, or wherever he was needed to extend God’s grace and love. In the Fourth of July parade in Edgartown, Alden carried a banner of peace.

In retirement, Alden was often too busy serving others to have hobbies, but he did enjoy swimming in the Lagoon between March and December, praying while walking most mornings in Vineyard Haven, a “rouser-douser” snowstorm, and time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A brisk sail with his nephew, Steve Besse, on the Vineyard waters would bring back memories of his own early skippering days alongside his brothers.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Long Hill Assisted Living Facility and all those who offered their support in his final days.

Alden is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara, his children Linda Besse, Mark Alden Besse, and Ellen Besse Susman, grandchildren Jared, Audrey, and Olivia Besse, and Katie and Amanda Susman, 11 nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4 RSV).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church Outreach Program, P.O. Box 1197, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568; The Island Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1874, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568; Habitat for Humanity, 121 Habitat St, Americus, GA 31709-3498; or International Rescue Committee, P.O. Box 6068, Albert Lea, MN 56007-9847.

Update Jan. 3 at 2:30 pm

Claire Fournier Mercier died peacefully in the early morning hours on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at her home in Edgartown. She was 86.

Born on May 21, 1931, in New Bedford, she was the daughter of Albert Fournier and Corinne Raymond. Her Aunts Lena and Louise and Uncle Ray also raised Claire and her older sister Louise, when their father became ill. Throughout her life she spoke fondly of the years spent as a child in New Bedford with them.

For years Claire and her family summered in Edgartown, where her mother worked as a hairdresser. It was on the Vineyard, at the age of 14, that Claire met the love of her life, Herbert R. Mercier Jr. They married six years later on June 16, 1951, in New Bedford on a rainy morning. And you know what they say about rainy weddings — the couple was married for 65 happy years before Herbert died in the spring of 2016.

Following their wedding, the couple moved to the Vineyard, bought land on Cooke Street in Edgartown, built a home, and filled it over the years with children. While Herbert worked to provide for the family, Claire was the homemaker, and over 14 years had nine children. While not tending to the house, she worked in the family’s Martha’s Vineyard memorabilia store on Edgartown’s Main Street, called Colonial Gifts. She also enjoyed ceramics and creating her youngest daughter Paulee’s numerous figure skating costumes. For those in the family looking for help with a tough stain or ripped clothing, Claire was the person you needed, and she never failed.

Once her children were grown, Claire’s love and attention turned to her grandchildren. In a family active in sports, she could be seen at various games in a signature spot that grandkids knew to always look at to catch her eye, a smile, and a thumbs-up. Claire was also a devoted member of the Catholic Church, and was honored with the Marian Medal for her service. Many have been recipients of her Christian generosity. She said her rosary every morning, and loved watching religious services on television.

Her loved ones will remember her for her selflessness, compassion, sense of humor, deep love for her family, stories of her past, and, of course, her feisty attitude and no-nonsense ways, which earned her the nickname “the General.”

Claire is survived by her sons and daughters Jeanne and her husband Barry, Herbert III (Randy) and his wife Katheryn (Kathy), Paul, Peter, Patricia, Patrick and his wife Christine, Philip and his wife Susan, Paulee and her husband Douglas; 29 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Louise Hathaway. She was predeceased by her husband Herbert and daughter Suzanne.

Visiting hours will be held at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, Jan. 3 from 5 to 7 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Edgartown on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 9 am, with a graveside service following at the West Side Cemetery in Edgartown. Immediately following the graveside service, the family invites everyone to a reception at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be mailed in Claire’s memory to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1748, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Updated to reflect a change in service times.

Jane Anderson Wilbur died peacefully in Marathon, Fla., on Dec. 23, 2017. Her youngest son, Dean, was with her when her time came.

Jane was born on Sept. 20, 1927, the youngest child and only daughter of Jane Miller Anderson and Samuel Pickens Anderson in Charleston, S.C. She grew up in Charleston, and at age 14 she met John Milnor Wilbur, whom she later married. After marrying in Charleston, Jane and John moved north to New England, where John entered seminary in Newton. From there they moved to East Greenwich, R.I., and then Beverly, where John pastored several American Baptist churches, with Jane fulfilling the key role of preacher’s wife. Together they had five children. When their youngest child was in elementary school, Jane went back to school herself, and earned the certification needed to teach music. Professionally Jane became a music educator for 20 years in the Beverly public school system. She could be seen many days loading her guitar and music into the car as she traveled from school to school throughout Beverly. She loved to sing, and was a strong supporter of and singer in choirs and choruses all her life. She had a clear, beautiful soprano voice well into her eighties.

Jane and John loved their large and exuberant family. She is survived by four grown children and six grandchildren. Their five children have lived all over the world, and the six grandchildren have brought great joy. Their children include Cynthia Wilbur Thomas and her husband John Mitchell Thomas of Grand Junction, Colo.; John Milnor Wilbur III and his wife Beth Saint-Amour of Vineyard Haven; Heyward Brent Wilbur; Dean Gordon Wilbur and his wife Cricket Corwin Wilbur of Ipswich; and Ann Wilbur King and her husband Stephen Darst King of Saratoga, Calif. Heyward Brent predeceased Jane and John. John died in 2011.

The six grandchildren are Kelly Jane Wilbur of South Dartmouth; Nicholas Brent Wilbur of West Tisbury; Samuel Gordon Wilbur of Salisbury; and Stephen Darst King Jr., Caroline Bissell King, and Emily Marion King of Saratoga, Calif. Kelly Wilbur recently married Alden Tangen at a beautiful wedding celebration coinciding with Jane’s 90th birthday.

In their retirement years, Jane and John purchased a beautiful Grand Banks trawler, Dixie W VI, and off they went. They cruised the East Coast and the Intracoastal Waterway for more than 10 years, making and sharing many beautiful memories and friendships. They discovered the Florida Keys, where Jane returned for over 10 winters. Most recently Jane resided in the scenic home Downaway on the shores of Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven.

A celebratory memorial service will be held on Martha’s Vineyard in summer of 2018.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace Church, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, or Kirk of the Keys Church in Marathon, Fla.

Penelope Homans Craig

Penelope Lincoln Homans Craig died of end-stage colon cancer at 8:55 am on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at the home of her brother and sister-in-law in West Tisbury. She finally found peace in the loving arms of God, surrounded and buoyed by the love of her family, after fighting a hard 22-month battle.

Penelope was born on June 26, 1958, to Elizabeth Greenleaf Pattee Homans and William Perkins Homans Jr., a prominent Boston civil rights and criminal defense attorney. She grew up in Cambridge, and attended Buckingham Browne and Nichols Elementary and High School. During her years there, she sang in the school choir, sang with the Madrigals, acted in drama (with a memorable performance of Titania, Queen of the Faeries, in Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”), and played flute for the Russian Dance troupe, with whom she traveled with to perform in Russia in 1976. She was also a remarkable hunter-jumper horseback rider in Ipswich. She attended Tufts University in 1976-77, and the University of Rhode Island thereafter.

She acquired amazing culinary skills, and was gifted with a creative flair which she brought to her early jobs in retail. She relocated to Newport, R.I., in the late 1970s, and lived there through the 1980s, when she opened her own retail clothing store, Penelope’s, which she operated for several years.

In 1997, she married Steven Craig. Together they started Boston Lead Co., where she served as a lead instructor and ran business operations over the past 20 years. The business involved arming individuals with the ability to inspect and remove lead and asbestos from buildings and school . They lived in Essex, Conn., where they raised their family. She returned to her acting career there, performing in the group Healing Hearts for the Arts.

Martha’s Vineyard was a vitally important place to her and her immediate family, and extended family by marriage. She went there from the time she was born, and herded her family, later in life, most every summer for years, to Seven Gates Farm in West Tisbury, staying at the Bunkhouse, a house that was built by her grandfather, father, and his siblings.

William and Edith Parkman Homans, her grandfather and grandmother, first leased in Seven Gates in 1930 and constructed a house. Bill loved a house in Maine, which was owned by a Griswald, an architect, who was also a cousin. He had the main house modeled after this house with the help of the architectural skills of his cousin. Later that decade they, in addition, constructed a 1,000-square-foot camphouse in the north corner of the lot. The bunkhouse was built using youthful Homans labor, learning carpentry skills. In 1955 the lot was split and the main house was purchased by Althea Revere. The Homans family kept the bunkhouse and the acreage around it. Her mother, Elizabeth Pattee, and grandmother, Penelope Pattee, rented near Beetlebung Corner, in Chilmark, long before Mrs. Craig’s birth.

Penelope’s strong love for the Vineyard led her, once it was clear that her cancer was unrelenting and her prognosis was grave, to choose to live her last days surrounded by the scrubby neck oaks and the sounds of the waves, which had provided her peace her whole life.

Penelope was a caring and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, great-aunt and grandmother. She leaves behind her husband Steven Craig; stepdaughter Kristen Craig Defrance and son-in-law August, and grandchildren Charlee, Olivia, Brooke, Ava, Zachary, and A.J.; stepson Mathew Craig and fiancé Ashley Arujo, along with granddaughters Julia and Peyton; sister Ana Ionnitiu, brother Nicholas Ionnitiu, and sister-in-law Lori Ionnitiu; niece Alexis Ionnitiu Willard, her husband, Burke, along with great-nieces Virginia and Margaret; brother William P Homans, and his daughter, niece Jessie Homans Bautsch, and her husband, Joseph; sister-in-law Leslie Homans, with her daughter, Savannah Homans, and son, Alex Homans, along with his fiancé, Heather; sister Elizabeth Homans McKenna, with her husband, Jeffrey McKenna, their children, sons Keifer McKenna and William McKenna, and daughter Lindsay with her husband, Mike Baxter, and their son, Griffin.

Penelope’s vibrant spirit, love, and beaming smile will be missed and remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be at Christ Church, Zero Garden Street, Cambridge, at 2 pm, Sunday, Jan. 21.
